Thermostats 101

Homeowner Adjusting Temperature On Their Thermostat

What Are Thermostats?

Thermostats are the brains of the HVAC system. They facilitate heating and cooling so the temperature in your house is where you want it to be.

How Do They Work?

When you set the desired temperature on the thermostat, it sends signals to your HVAC system. Your HVAC system then produces bursts of hot or cold air to maintain the set temperature on the thermostat.

What Do The On And Auto Settings Mean?

These settings control your HVAC unit’s fan. When set to On, the fan blows continuously. When set to Auto, your fan blows only to circulate hot or cold air. The Auto setting is more commonly used, because it consumes less electricity. The On setting is popular in households with humid climates, since it dissuades mold growth.

What Types Of Thermostats Are There?

There are three basic types: nonprogrammable, programmable, and smart thermostats.

What Are Nonprogrammable Thermostats?

Nonprogrammable thermostats are classic, accessible, and inexpensive. Chances are you grew up with one in your home. Their simple, easy-to-use interface makes heating and cooling your home a breeze. However, they do have a few disadvantages. You’ll have to make all adjustments manually. They are also the least efficient type out of the three models.

What Are Programmable Thermostats?

Programmable thermostats are perfect for the working household. If your house is empty for long periods during the day, there’s no reason to leave your furnace or air conditioner on. Programmable thermostats give you Home and Away options. They are a more efficient option––you’ll pay considerably less on your energy bill. On the flip side, they require a larger initial investment than traditional thermostats. Also, the starting-and-stopping mechanism may be harder on your equipment.

What Are Smart Thermostats?

Smart thermostats are the most futuristic option. These devices can be controlled remotely on your computer, tablet, and/or smartphone. Because of their intelligent design, a smart thermostat can track your living habits and adjust itself after awhile. You can also monitor your energy usage on your mobile devices. Because of the advanced technology, this option is the priciest out of the three.
